Volunteers Needed – The Princess Margaret Ride to Conquer Cancer

On June 8-9, 2024, join us for two remarkable days as we mark the 17th anniversary of The Princess Margaret Ride to Conquer Cancer, a transformative event dedicated to advancing life-changing cancer research at The Princess Margaret. Thousands of participants will take on the challenge of riding 200+KM from Toronto to Niagara, all with an undeniable spirit of camaraderie and community.

Volunteers play a crucial role in bringing this event to life. Whether assisting with the opening ceremony in Toronto/Niagara, helping set up the main campsite in Hamilton, or managing the finish line in Niagara Falls, your time, skills, and creativity make a positive impact.

Please note: completing the registration form does not automatically register you to volunteer for the Ride to Conquer Cancer or any other PMCF event. You will need to view current opportunities under “Events” in your portal once you have created an account.

Please note that Event Volunteers must be a minimum of 16 years old at the time of the event for which they are volunteering. Minors aged 16 and 17 years old must be accompanied to their shift by a responsible adult who is a minimum of 18 years old.

WALK-IN COUNSELLING AT THORNHILL LIBRARY

The focus of your walk-In will be on creating a short-term plan that will make a difference for you right away – using the strengths, resources, and supports you have right now.
Pop-up Walk-in Clinic service is now available for free during the first session and first visit.
Last session will start one hour before the end time.

Black History Month Weekend Activities at the Varley Art Gallery of Markham

Celebrate Black History Month with the Varley Art Gallery of Markham! Join us as we honour the past, celebrate the present, and embrace the future through art and culture.
Black History Month: Reading Series
Saturday, February 24 | 2 to 2:30 PM | Free | Registration not required.
Drop in for an informal reading in the Varley’s Introduction Gallery. Readings will be drawn from Pioneers of the Caribbean by Ingrid V. Lambie and Patricia L. Tully, and from Stories from the Krib by Ingrid V. Lambie, Patricia L. Tully, and Angola Charles.

A special book sale will be held during the event. Stories from the Krib is available for $25.00 each, while Pioneers of the Caribbean can be purchased for $30.00 each. Enjoy knowing that 20% of all sales contribute to fundraising efforts to support Afro-Caribbean home for seniors.

Black History Month: Silent Art Auction
Saturday and Sunday, February 24, and 25 | 2 to 4 PM | Registration not required.
The Silent Art Auction will feature framed paintings by local artist Dawn Brotherton, along with pieces donated from a senior’s collection of Afro-Caribbean art by artists Herbie Rose, Bernard Reid, and a commissioned work by Expo 87 artist Alexander Cooper. Proceeds support the Afro-Caribbean home for seniors.
Black History Month: Steel Pan Performance
Sunday, February 25 | 2 to 4 PM | Free | Registration not required.
Immerse yourself in the captivating sounds of steel pan music performed by pannist Daryl Williams. Presented in collaboration with the Cornerstone Church community.

Africville Stories: This is the story of Canada’s oldest black community, Africville, which was destroyed for ’urban improvement’ in the 1960s. Within the tragedy of this event comes stories of the people of this community shared through song, narration and music spanning jazz, R&B and gospel.

Let’s Care for Our Mind (Youth led workshop)

Youth led workshop that focuses on de-stigmatizing mental health illnesses and discussing remedies and techniques for self-care. Pre-registration is required; newcomer participants must provide Permanent Resident number upon registration. There will be raffle prizes and interactive activities, so please come support our youth!!

Attention all high school students! We have an exciting leadership opportunity to share with you! Olympian Sarah Wells and the Believe Initiative team are hosting a FREE virtual conference called EVOLVE 2021 on August 6 & 7 for high schoolers across Canada! During this conference, students will learn valuable skills related to mindset, confidence, entrepreneurship, and networking.

The focus will be on developing elite level leadership and give you the opportunity to hear from Olympic athletes DURING the Summer Olympics, as well as ask questions to industry experts from Sony Music, Twitter, RBC, and more to be announced! COVID 19 – HOW AND WHERE YOU CAN HELP!

In today’s unprecedented environment, with the world in a State of Emergency, there are always communities and individuals ready and willing to help. In a pandemic, this becomes even more challenging when we cannot physically get together. Communities, organizations and individuals are all responsible to be diligent at Social Distancing. This is taking ACTION! This is making a difference!

There are new and emerging ways that individuals can contribute and an increasing need for support now, and in the near future, to ensure the health of our communities, charities and non-profits. As many organizations work through how to protect their communities safely and responsibly, we all need to remain patient and understanding. Canada Sews – York Region:  This wonderful community initiative in Markham has grown to support all of York Region.  On April 21, 2020 8,000 ladies and gents across Canada have sewn more than 20,000 face masks, headbands, scrub caps and scrub bags for frontline workers, shelters, seniors and First Nations communities.  Volunteers are sewing, delivering, donating materials and helping to administer to help our community stay as safe as possible.  If you would like to help or are a frontline worker in need of any of these items please email canadasews.markham@gmail.com .  For more information click on https://www.facebook.com/groups/canadasewsmarkham/

CHATS: We know seniors are experiencing new challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but CHATS is here to help. CHATS have adapted some of their existing supports and have come up with some new ways to help. Urgently needs Personal Protective Equipment. KIDS Help Phone needs you!  You can practice social distancing and still ensure that you are helping kids when kids need someone.  For three decades, young people have been reaching out to Kids Help Phone for the support they need.  In 2018, in partnership with Crisis Text Line, Kids Help Phone launched the first ever 24/7, free, nationwide texting service.
