SUMMARY:Food Drive Community Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Help take a bite out of hunger. Due to the continued urgent need from our local food banks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic\, we will continue running this modified version of our Fall Food Drive. Please follow all COVID-19 protocols.\nTo Receive Community Involvement Hours:\nGo to the grocery store and purchase the most “urgently needed items” for your local Food Bank/Pantry under the supervision of a parent/guardian/teacher. (We recommend shopping from the list on our Fall Food Drive page on our website.) Once your shopping is complete\, drop donations off to your local Food Bank/Pantry. Be sure to take photos of your volunteering in action.\nOnce your shopping and delivery is complete\, calculate how long it took you and add the time to your Community Involvement form.\nEmail your photo\, along with your Community Involvement form\, to info@neighbourhoodnetwork.org. You must include parent/guardian/teacher name\, signature\, and phone number to verify how many hours you volunteered.\nNeighbourhood Network Staff will review your form\, verify your total hours with your supervisor\, and sign and return it to you through email.\nThere is no maximum to how many times you may complete this volunteer opportunity\, as long as a supervisor can verify your efforts.\nPlease include in your email whether we have your permission to share your photos on our social media pages. Thank you for helping us #spread joy not germs ! \n

SUMMARY:Jeff Thomas: The Indigenous Map Maker’s Room
DESCRIPTION:Jeff Thomas is a nationally recognized photo-based artist\, writer\, and curator living in Ottawa\, with work featured in major art collections in Canada and the United States. \nIn his work\, he examines historical and contemporary views of Indigeneity and addresses the impact of issues such as urbanization\, land ownership\, and historical ways of representation. \nThe exhibition The Indigenous Map Maker’s Room shows work from his larger series\, Indians on Tour\, which features Indian figurines posed in front of national landscapes and monuments.  In his photographs\, Thomas reframes the stereotypical representation of the figures\, presenting them as tourists in a contemporary environment\, challenging preconceptions of Indigenous peoples and Indigenous history. \n“His work presents re-contextualized historical images of Indigenous Peoples in a contemporary environment\,” Latcham’s CEO Margaret Wallace said. “Bringing Jeff Thomas’s work to Latcham Art Centre is such an important opportunity to acknowledge Indigenous history.” \nThe exhibition runs October 30 to January 2 at the Latcham Art Centre. The opening reception takes place November 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. \nFor more information or to register for the opening reception\, visit www.latchamartcentre.ca. \n
